Operation Illuminate shines a light on crime

A Derbyshire Dales operation to provide discounted crime prevention materials to local people is being re-launched as the nights get longer.

Items being offered include ‘dusk til dawn’ light bulbs, door chimes, shed alarms and letterbox covers.

Derbyshire Dales residents can visit the police stations in Matlock, Ashbourne, Bakewell, Hope Valley (Bradwell Netherside) and Wirksworth to buy these products.

Operation Illuminate is being run by the Safer Derbyshire Dales Community Safety Partnership, which includes the police and Derbyshire Dales District Council. There was a 64% reduction in household burglary in the months when Operation Illuminate ran last year.

Chairman of the Partnership Councillor Lewis Rose OBE, who is also Leader of Derbyshire Dales District Council, said: “One of the reasons the Dales has one of the lowest burglary rates in the whole of England is because we are proactive with crime prevention measures.”

DDDC’s Partnership Sergeant Garry Staples said: “We are fortunate to live in a low crime area, but residents can help themselves by taking some simple measures such as using ‘dusk til dawn’ light bulbs that make the house look occupied when you are away, and letterbox covers that can stop potential thieves reaching through and stealing keys.”

Other simple home security measures include:

Make sure windows and doors are locked when you leave the house or go to bed

Make sure valuable items, such as mobile phones and laptops, are not left on display near windows

Take house and car keys with you to the bedroom at night

Anyone with information about burglaries in the area should call the Derbyshire police on 0345 123 33 33 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
