TWO Olympic hopefuls inspired pupils at Taxal & Fernilee Primary School as they participated in a sponsored sports event last week.

Pupils rubbed shoulders with gymnast Matt Hennessey and 800-metre runner Charlotte Best, who has trained under Olympic gold medal-winner Dame Kelly Holmes, during the ‘Sports for Schools’ event, part of the national Get Set Olympic network.

Staff and pupils performed four fitness activities in order to raise money, partly for updating the school’s PE equipment and partly for providing sporting opportunities for children who do not have access to good facilities or training.

After the challenge, Matt talked about how he became an international gymnast and gave a demonstration.

Headteacher Vicky Keen said: “The pupils really enjoyed taking part in what was a really good, all-school event, which brought us all together. Charlotte and Matt were truly inspirational.”

The event was organised by the PE co-ordinator Julia Brownsword and school governor Jane Kent.
