POLICE are appealing for information about a burglary at an empty flat in New Mills that led to a gas leak.
At around 5.30am on Monday, November 28 police were called to Rock Street following a burglary in which radiators and piping were stolen. Thieves then attempted to steal the boiler which caused the gas leak.
Market Street was closed for an hour before the leak was made secure and gas to the property was cut off. Fire crews from Buxton were also in attendance.
Community Safety Sergeant Jon Lloyd said: “This type of theft is particularly dangerous and could have had much more serious consequences. Thieves who damage gas pipes in an attempt to steal metal for scrap are not only endangering themselves but the wider community.”
