Emma McClarkin, Conservative MEP for the East Midlands, has welcomed the confirmation of which Derbyshire communities the Olympic Torch will pass through next year, as “really exciting news for local residents”.
Emma, who is Conservative spokesman for Sport and Culture in the European Parliament, spoke after the Olympic Games organisers released details of the route the Torch is to take.
The Olympic Torch will pass through Derbyshire on Friday 29th June 2012, on a journey from Glapwell to Derby, and again on Saturday 30th June as it heads out of Derbyshire on its way to Birmingham.
Speaking about the announcement, Emma said:
“It’s brilliant that the Olympic Torch will be going to so many communities in Derbyshire, and really exciting news for local residents.
“The organising committee has said that 95% of the UK population lives within 10 miles of the Torch route, and I’m very excited that everyone in Derbyshire will be able to see it pass close to them.
“The Olympic Games will have a great motivating effect on sport in the UK, and I hope that it inspires people in Derbyshire to have a go at their favourite. The Olympic Torch coming to local communities will increase the anticipation and make people feel part of what I’m sure will be a fabulous games in 2012.”
