Meet ‘the rig’, a five-storey scaffold which was designed to resist the worst north-easterlies.

Constructed in 1990, this imposing temporary structure was situated on the wild and windy moors above Harpur Hill.

Standing at 40-ft-high and covered in safety netting, the mock scaffold aided the Health and Safety Executive with its research into storm damage.

This saw the structure subjected to severe wind batterings representing force-ten gales and above, with gusts of up to 100mph.
