Emergency work to repair a major gas leak has led to the closure of the main road through a Derbyshire village.

A diversion has been put in place while emergency repair work is carried out by the National Grid and motorists are being asked to allow more time to complete their journeys.

The A6013, Station Road, Bamford, is closed for 50 metres both sides of the railway bridge while the repairs are carried out.

The gas mains are in the centre of the road which means once safety barriers are in place the road is too narrow for traffic to pass safely, although people walking can still use the footbridge as access is being maintained by workers on the site.

The official diversion is via the A6187 Sickleholme to Brough, the B6049 Brough to Anchor Crossroads, the A623 Anchor Crossroads to Barmoor Clough, the A6 Barmoor Clough to Newtown / New Mills, A6015 Newtown/ New Mills to Hayfield, the A624 Hayfield to Glossop and the A57 Glossop to Bamford and vice versa.

Local traffic will be able to use some local routes although these are not suitable for HGVs.

Bus services between Castleton and Sheffield continue to run in both directions. Passengers will be escorted on foot across the bridge to connect to each service on the other side of the railway bridge to continue their journeys.

Schools have been informed where school bus services are affected.

A Derbyshire County Council spokesman said: “This job is being classed as a high priority. Extra staff were working at the weekend so the National Grid can get this road open as quickly as possible.

“Because the repairs need to be carried out very close to the foundations of the railway bridge large mechanical tools cannot be used so the digging of the road must be done using lightweight hand-held machinery which takes longer.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused but the repairs have to be carried out for safety reasons and are unavoidable.”

The road is expected to open by the weekend.
