WEATHER forecasters are warning of potentially “severe” snow in Buxton and the High Peak over the weekend.

The Met Office has issued an amber alert warning of wintry weather from Friday morning.

A Met Office spokesman said up to 25cm of snow could fall.

The spokesman added: “As winds strengthen, blizzard conditions are a possibility, especially over high ground.

“Clearly there is potential for some severe disruption and the public is advised to be prepared to alter travel plans and take extra care.”

The first snowfall of 2013 hit the High Peak this week.

A band of wintry weather swept through the area on Sunday night and during Monday – sparking travel disruption and school closures.

Buxton residents woke up to about two centimetres of snow on Monday and wintry showers continued throughout the morning.

The snow led to the closure of Buxton Community School and caused problems for motorists on a number of routes including the Cat and Fiddle, Snake Pass and Ashbourne roads.

Council gritters and snow wardens stepped up efforts to clear treacherous roads and pavements in the sub-zero conditions.

And Buxton was thrown into the national spotlight as TV news crews from Sky and Daybreak visited the town to report on the snow.

The High Peak is in the grip of a country-wide Arctic freeze.
