Warning over sneak theft spree

POLICE are urging High Peak householders to lock windows and doors after a number of sneak-in burglaries.

Officers are advising people to lock up before going to bed and when leaving the house to stop thieves sneaking in and taking items such as purses.

The advice comes after a thief entered a house in Danesway, Chapel-en-le-Frith, some time between 8.25am and 3.25pm on Tuesday, June 16, through an unlocked door and searched a handbag, although nothing was stolen.

A wallet was taken from a house in Horseshoe Avenue, Dove Holes, at some time between 8pm on Monday, June 15 and 7.30am on Tuesday, June 16, when someone entered through an unlocked door.

On the afternoon of Tuesday, June 16, a burglar entered a house in Cressbrook and stole jewellery.

Crime Reduction Officer PC John Riley said: "Crime is low in the High Peak but this can often lead to complacency and people may forget to lock doors and windows.

"Even if you are out in your garden, you should make sure your home is secure.

"There were 421 house burglaries in the High Peak and Derbyshire Dales during the last financial year. Although this is a reduction of 20 per cent compared to six years previously, 30 per cent of these incidents were sneak-in burglaries which could have been prevented if homeowners had locked windows and doors."

Police are urging people to:

* Always lock windows before going to bed. This includes any first floor windows with access from flat roofs.

* Make sure alarms are set at night if you have one installed

* Ensure keys are not left in doors as thieves may be able to hook them through letterboxes

* Secure garages and close and lock gates that give access to the back of your property

* Make sure valuables, such as purses and jewellery are not left near open windows

* Report any suspicious activity to the police immediately.
