High Peak residents are being urged to remain alert about a fraudulent Royal Mail scam which is circulating in the run-up to Christmas.

Offenders circulate a malicious email fraudulently claiming to be from the Royal Mail, stating that the company is holding an item for the victim with the subject header often saying Mail - lost/missing package.

The person is then asked to open up an attachment and fill in the form to receive their parcel but the document is believed to contain a zip file with a malicious virus.

Detective Inspector Rob King, Head of the Derbyshire Constabulary Economic Crime Unit, said: “Although we are unaware of any cases in Derbyshire it is really important for us to get the message across to the public to raise awareness and prevent future victims of this type of fraud.”

Royal Mail is aware of the scam and is taking action to protect customers from these fraudsters.

If you believe that you have received this fraudulent email do not open the attachment and report it to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.
