Village orchard proposal set to bear fruit
AN INNOVATIVE project to create a community orchard in Hayfield could soon be bearing fruit.
Hayfield Parish Council and Hayfield Primary School are looking into devising an orchard in the village, to cultivate native fruiting trees and shrubs with the potential to be preserved and utilised as local produce.
Hayfield Parish Council clerk Mike Crompton said: "Never has the time been more appropriate to begin a project in Hayfield which has as its primary focus a care for the environment, an awareness of the natural world, the wider issues of climate change, and the imperative for all of us to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and imported foodstuffs."
Although in the early planning stages, the Orchard Project is being shaped around the national curriculum, with the potential to also involve secondary school pupils, local Scouts and Brownie.
If the project goes ahead, it could be rolled out over a number of years.
Parish council chairman Andrew Ramwell added: "This sounds a wonderful idea and I hope we can pursue it as quickly as possible."
