Views sought on plans to tackle dog fouling issue

Community leaders fed up with dog walkers not clearing up after their pets are taking action to clean up the Peaks.

High Peak Borough Council is asking residents to comment on proposed plans to ban dogs from specified areas such as playgrounds, bowling greens and multi–use games areas.

Other proposed measures include repeat offenders being ordered to put dogs on leads.

Memorial Park, in Whaley Bridge, would be affected if the new rules came to pass, where dog fouling has been a problem for some time. At a recent meeting of Whaley Bridge Town Council, Cllr Rodney Gilmour said people had complained of bags of dog mess being thrown in people’s gardens rather than in bins.

Borough councillor Anthony McKeown commented: “The majority of dog owners do behave responsibly but it’s important that we consider all options for making sure this kind of behaviour is the rule rather than the exception.”

Comments can be made in writing to David Smith, Community Safety Manager, High Peak Borough Council, Town Hall, Market Place Buxton, SK17 6EL or by emailing at cleaner.greener@highpeak.gov.uk by 4pm on March 31.
