Vandalism brings new loos 'curfew'

PARISH councillors in Chapel-en-le-Frith are kicking up a stink about the town's new public toilets – because they are no longer a convenience!

Repeated vandalism at the newly-renovated loos on Chapel Market Place is believed to have forced High Peak Borough Council to start closing them at around tea-time.

The decision angered members of Chapel Parish Council at their monthly meeting last Tuesday.

Vice Chairman Michael Harrison said: "I am shocked that they are being closed so early. The whole point of having the toilets refurbished was to accommodate people in the evenings, and this to me is just a retrograde step.

"If the toilets are being vandalised, it is because certain pipes and conduits are vulnerable."

Cllr Mike Smith agreed: "The very reason for the work was so that the people on the Market Place late at night, when the pubs come out, have a toilet."

And Cllr Richard Clarey commented: "The cost of having someone come out to open and shut them every day must be a nice waste of taxpayers' money."

The borough council recently invested 50,000 in refurbishing the toilets, with the aim of making them more accessible, especially for disabled people.

Cllr Ann Young said the Market Place conveniences were a vital local facility, as not all the pubs and restaurants in the town had disabled-friendly toilets.

Added Cllr Stewart Young: "A couple of disabled people have asked me if they could have a RADAR key which would let them in, because they are struggling."
