University honour for Chrissie

CHRISSIE Maher OBE, founder of the New Mills- based Plain English Campaign, has received an honorary fellowship from Liverpool John Moores University.

She has campaigned for over 40 years to replace jargon used in public information with clear language, and the award is in recognition of her services to communications.

Chrissie, who was presented with her award by Dr Brian May CBE, lead guitarist of Queen, received a standing ovation from over 1,000 guests. She said: "This honour from the Liverpool John Moores University will be a treasured symbol of the fellowship I received in my early years of campaigning."
