Top marks for Buxton students

STUDENTS across the High Peak celebrated A Level success last week – but none more so than Buxton Community School students Matthew Eyre and Beth Heasman.

Matthew scored one of the top five marks among over 9,000 students in History nationwide, with Beth achieving one of the top five in over 19,000 entries in English Literature.

The school continues to achieve a high pass rate of 97% with 18% of Year 13 students achieving mainly 'A's.

Students achieving at least three 'A's included; Amy Clark, Matthew Eyre, Beth Heasman, Natasha Hunter, Daniel Jones, Amy McNulty, James Rank, Sam Theaker, Dot Wales and Charlotte Whiteley.

However, as Headteacher Deb Hill explained: "We always celebrate excellence and the highest grades – but equally we recognise the achievements of all our students who have achieved their personal best.

"We have a comprehensive Sixth Form with a wide range of students and it's important we value each individual's strengths and abilities.

"We're also particularly pleased that students have achieved top grades across all subjects in the school. This reflects both the hard work of our students and the high quality teaching and commitment of staff."

Cheadle and Marple

Cheadle & Marple Sixth Form College is celebrating another record year in this year's A Level and Advanced Vocational courses, both in terms of pass rate and high grades.

Several students achieved A grades in at least four Advanced level subjects. These include:

Craig Dawson, 17, (formerly of Chapel-en-le-Frith High School) from Chapel-en-le-Frith – A grades in Chemistry, Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Physics. Craig will study Mathematics at York University.

Brendan Leslie, 18 (Chapel-en-le-Frith HS) from Chapel-en-le-Frith – A grades in Chemistry, Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Physics. Craig is continuing his education at Durham University reading Mathematics.

Adam Thatcher, 18 (Chapel-en-le-Frith HS) from Chapel-en-le-Frith - A grades in Economics, Law, Mathematics and Music. Adam is reading Law at Durham University.

Two local students who have secured their places at Oxford or Cambridge University include:

Holly Arnfield, 18 (Chapel-en-le-Frith HS) from Buxworth – with A grades in Biology, Chemistry, Classical Civilisation and English Language & Literature. Holly will study Biological Sciences at Queen's College, Oxford.

Tim Talbot, 18, (Chapel-en-le-Frith HS) from Whaley Bridge – with A grades in Chemistry, Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics and grade B French, will read Mathematics at King's College, Cambridge.

Two sets of twins - Emma and Lucy Barrow, 18 from Whaley Bridge, and Hollie and Katie Wimpenny, 18 from Hazel Grove - all celebrated their double successes with a clutch of superb results.

Emma Barrow (Chapel-en-le-Frith HS) achieved a grade B in Law, D in Psychology and an E in Economics and is hoping to study Criminology, while Lucy achieved an A grade in Law and B grades in Economics and Mathematics and will study Primary Education at Durham University.

Buxworth student Holly Arnfield is celebrating getting into Oxford University.

The 18-year-old was on holiday in Spain when the results were announced – a nervous phone call to Marple Sixth Form College revealing she had got the four grade A's she needed to study biology at Queen's College.

A former pupil at Buxworth Primary School and Chapel High, Holly hopes to eventually work in conservation.

"I can't wait to start the course and would like to thank all those who have taught me over the years," she said.Lady Manners School

This has been a successful year at Lady Manners School with many strong performances at Advanced Level for Year 13 students.

There were 162 students who completed their studies this year. Four students actually gained Grade A passes in five full Advanced Level courses – a huge achievement. They are Elliot Banks, Nicholas Bennett, Joseph Griffiths and Amy Nicholson.

New Mills

New Mills Sixth Form students are celebrating again, after achieving a 97% pass rate in their A level results this year.

Head Boy Phil Bowen led by example with an A in Maths and 2 Bs in Physics and Information Technology. Many students are going onto higher education and have accepted their first choice places at university in September.

The students have chosen a wide range of exciting courses such as forensic studies, criminology, product design, media studies and philosophy, to name a few and will travel the length and breadth of the country.

Some students have deferred their university places until September 2009 to travel the world, including Ruth Fuller who is off to Australia.

Incoming Head Girl Sophie Monkman is now looking to emulate Phil, having gained two As and 2 Bs at AS, although top performer in Year 12, Tilly Spencer, can be proud to have beaten Sophie in gaining 4 As at AS Level.

Stockport Grammar School

Girls and boys at Stockport Grammar School have beaten last year's record to secure the highest A level grades in the school's history. Thirty eight students have achieved straight A grades, and all nine Oxbridge candidates have fulfilled their ambitions and gained the grades they need to take up their places. Eight out of every ten papers have been awarded A and B grades, with a 100% pass rate overall.

Local residents, Kimeya Baker, James Ricketts and Alex O'Connor of Disley, Howard Bristol of Whaley Bridge and Leah Eades of Chapel-en-le-Frith achieved straight 'A' grades in their chosen subjects.

Sophie Clarke of Bramhall, pictured top left with Howard Bristol, said on results day: 'We are thrilled; we are both going to Cambridge and relieved to have got the results we needed.'

Buxton's trio of Aces

A trio of high-flying Buxton young academics from the King's School have A-ced their A Levels.

Verity Cross, 18, from Morland Park, gained four As and one B and will now study Pharmacy at Bath with a view to working in drug research.

First XV rugby captain George Morrisey, 18, from Sheraton Way, gained five straight A grades and after a year out will study Medicine.

National award winning poet and essay writer Emily Middleton, 18, from Kents Bank Road, gained three straight A grades ,and after reading Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Oxford wants to work in international development.

Overall the King's School in Macclesfield celebrated superb A level results this summer continuing what is now a seven-year record of 100% pass rate.

71 per cent of grades were at A/B level and remarkably four in every ten passes were at A grade. The A-C passes were equally impressive at 92 per cent.

Head Dr Stephen Coyne added: "These are the first students to have studied in the new 2.5 million Sixth Form Centre opened last September; this has certainly had a very positive effect on their lives and their working habits. Increasingly we see many of our most talented students coming from Buxton and the High Peak, and Verity, George and Emily have all been great ambassadors for the town."
