Bakewell and District Probus Club’s speaker John Craike fuelled this fascination by describing the events leading up to the tragedy, and the influence of many of the leading characters involved.

He explained how the rigid class system of the day had led to the situation in which so many lives had been put at risk and lost. He narrated stories of heroic and despicable actions by individuals during and after the ship’s sinking. The inadequacy of shipping regulations at the time meant that the vessel, quite legally, was equipped with sufficient lifeboats for only half the number of passengers on board.
