Time capsules buried as market looks to future

Future generations will get a taste of life today after a time capsule was buried in Buxton Market Place.

The container was buried under the market cross which has been moved from outside Kwik Save to the front of the town hall.

Two other time capsules from 1879 and 1949, which were unearthed when the cross was taken down, were also re-buried.

The new capsule contains the front page of last week's Advertiser, a Buxton Community School tie, a mobile phone, a Manchester United football ticket, postcards, a street map and a photograph of this year's Buxton Carnival Queen and her attendants.

There is also a bag from Buxton clothing shop Potters, a ticket from Buxton Opera House, a Safeway till receipt and electrical switches from Otter Control in the capsule.

Buxton Town Centre Co-ordinator Jean Ball said: "The work we are doing to regenerate Higher Buxton, which is the original town centre, is historic and moving the market cross is part of that."

Youngsters from the Buxton Volunteer Bureau worked with Jean Ball to fill the capsule which was made at Newton's Forge on South Avenue.

Derbyshire Museum's Manager Ros Westwood added: "I love the idea of adding another time capsule because it gives a sense of continuity."

"It is part of a long tradition the British have. There is even a time capsule under Cleopatra's Needle in London."

The market cross was originally outside the town hall but it was controversially moved to its spot outside the supermarket in 1949.

"Market crosses are part of the history of towns: they show the longevity of the place, they are a constant," added Mrs Westwood.
