Third specialism is first for county

A PEAK DISTRICT school has become the first in Derbyshire to be awarded three specialisms.

Hope Valley College's application for a specialism in Applied Learning with Gifted and Talented has been successful. It already specialises in technology and arts.

The college was invited to bid for the third specialism last year on the back of an impressive OFSTED inspection and excellent exam results.

Principal Bernie Hunter said: "It is a credit to the hard work of our students and staff that we got the opportunity to bid for a third specialism and the fact we were successful will enable us to take students' essential life skills to a more diverse and higher level than ever before."

The award of the third specialism will generate additional funds of between 60,000 and 90,000 per annum for the next four years, from the Department for Children, Schools and Families, with the opportunity to bid for a further 50,000.

Mr Hunter added: "The extra funds will enable us to improve across all subject areas the already high standard of education available for our students.

"We are committed to preparing our youngsters for the world of work which academically we are doing quite well at the moment.

"However our provision of applied learning must match our academic success so that every strength of every student is fully developed and fully catered for."
