The fun starts now for well dressings

BUXTON Wells Dressing Festival starts today (Thursday), marking the beginning of many events in the town.

The well dressings will be created by a team of dressers who will demonstrate their craft at St John's Church on St John's Road from 12pm to 8.30pm today, from 9.30am to 8pm tomorrow and on Saturday from 9am to 5pm.

The finished wells will then be blessed on Sunday, at 1.45pm, with High Peak's deputy mayor Councillor Cynthia Mitchell joining clergy, and the retiring festival royalty on a civic procession to each of the wells with music provided by Burbage and Fairfield bands.

Former mayoress, Stella Gill, will then crowns 2009's Wells Dressing Queen Holly Cole and Rosebud Isabel Eccles at St John's Church at 3pm.

Isabel is taking on the role of Rosebud for a second year.

On Carnival Day on July 11, Holly, Isabel and attendants Paige Farlam, Chloe Berry and Sarah-Jane Day will board the festival coach and take part in one of the largest carnival processions in the region.

Current Queen Emily Bell said: "I would like to thank my family, friends and the Buxton Wells Dressing Festival Committee. They have been so supportive and helped me throughout the year.

"I have enjoyed attending the carnivals and Courts of Queens with my retinue and I wish Queen Elect Holly and her retinue all the best in the coming year."

A full list of events is available in the Wells Dressing Festival brochure currently on sale in local shops with details on walks, a history talk, car treasure hunts and even the visit of a Roman soldier.

It is not too late to get involved in the carnival procession and entry forms are available from the Buxton Advertiser, Goddards Music Shop and Hargreaves.
