Taking to street to stop speeders
A GROUP of residents and local councillors in New Mills are working alongside the police to help reduce speeding traffic.
The volunteers have been working with police officers and PCSOs from New Mills and Hayfield Safer Neighbourhood Team to set up a Community Speed Watch scheme.
Volunteers patrol with officers using radar guns to note any vehicles travelling at excessive speeds. A letter is then sent to the owner to advise them about their speed and asking them to respect local limits.
Motorists are warned that if they continue to speed, they risk getting a fine and that the data recorded by the scheme will help officers identify locations for speed detection equipment.
Posters and signs are being put up in the area to ensure drivers are aware of the initiative.
Team Sgt John Bowman said: "Local residents have expressed concerns about the speed of traffic and we're working with volunteers who are keen to help address the issue in their community.
"We hope motorists will be reminded to drive safely and with respect for local speed limits. The aim is that the scheme will help keep roads safer for drivers, riders and pedestrians both now and in the future."
Councillor Lance Dowson, one of those who has been trained to use the equipment, has welcomed the move.
"It has certainly had an effect. Traffic that might have been going a bit fast are not breaking the speed limit by the time they go past."
