Students aim for £10,000 in prizes

HOPE Valley College students are helping combat climate change as part of a competition aimed at making schools more energy efficient.

Run by Norwich Union, in conjunction with Global Action Plan, the competition offers a 10,000 prize to the school which reduces its electricity consumption the most between January and March.

The Year 8 students are also being asked to encourage the local community to take steps to reduce their own carbon footprint. The school which receives the highest amount of pledges from its community – which can range from switching off lights in empty rooms to draught proofing homes – will win a further 5,000.

Science teacher Steve Taylor said: "It is vital that youngsters are aware of what effect their actions have upon the environment. Making sure students have an awareness of green issues is critical to us tackling climate change and the dire consequences it could bring with it."

The competition entrants, pupils Hebe and Fergus Carmichael, Lucas Mitchell, Alice Shaw, Joss Allsopp, Melissa Worthington and Freya Williams, have been examining climate and green issues during their science lessons.

Principal Bernie Hunter added: "We can hope that by being involved in this competition the students will learn how to reduce energy consumption and find alternative energy supplies to deal with global warming."

Pledges can be made at www.hopevalley.derbyshire.sch.uk by selecting the Climate Change Champions link.
