Students from Buxton College received real motivation to go the extra mile for their annual ‘Run, Ride, Row’ charity challenge, when Olympic Gold Medal winning rower Anna Watkins popped in to cheer them on.

Anna, who won Gold for Team GB at the London 2012 Olympic Games in the women’s double sculls, dropped into Buxton College last week as students were taking part in a gruelling physical challenge; completing over 1,500 miles by bike, boat and on foot without leaving their campus in just 24 hours.

The 75 Uniformed Public Services and Sports BTEC National Diplomas students took four-hour-long shifts, rowing and cycling on stationary machines and running around the Buxton Dome, keeping up continuous activity for the full 24-hour period. In doing so they raised over £800 for the charity When You Wish Upon a Star.

Richard Robinson, Lecturer on the Uniformed Public Services course, said: “What she told us about training for her Olympic success will also show them what can be achieved with hard work and determination.”

Anna added: “It was great to see the students work as a team, and be so supportive of one another as they got through this challenge.”

Sam Lomas, 17, a first year Uniformed Public Services student said: “Anna was really inspirational.

“Her tips on the rowing machine definitely helped us get through some more miles.”
