Many roads remain closed as snow continues to fall across the High Peak and Hope Valley today (Saturday).

Heavy snowfall and strong winds throughout the night caused huge drifts and blizzard conditions, leaving many rural communities cut-off as high-level routes were closed and others left treacherous.

Buxton Mountain Rescue Team received a number of call-outs to assist stranded motorists in and around the Buxton area.

Nine inches of snow has reportedly fallen in Buxton, according to the local weather website www.buxtonweather.co.uk, with larger accumulations on higher ground.

As of 2.15pm today (Saturday), Derbyshire County Council was reporting the following weather-related road closures: A53 Buxton to Leek; A54/A537 Cat and Fiddle Buxton to Macclesfield; A57 Snake Pass; A6024 towards Holme Moss; A515 Ashbourne Road in the High Peak; A5270 Coalpit Lane, Chelmorton, near Buxton; A624 Chinley Head, between Chinley and Hayfield; A6 Buxton to Chapel; B6105 onto Woodhead Pass; B5047 Whaley Bridge to Macclesfield; Martinside, Dove Holes; Smalldale to Peak Forest; Mam Nick road; Buxton Old Road, Stonedge, Whaley Bridge; Rushup Edge; Winnats Pass, Castleton; Tor Side.

The wintry weather has also decimated the weekend’s sporting calendar. Football fixtures including Buxton FC v Nantwich, New Mills AFC v Farsley and Padiham Reserves v New Mills Reserves have been postponed. All fixtures in the Hope Valley League are also off.

Snowfall is expected to ease throughout the day and a Met Office yellow warning for snow remains in force for Derbyshire until midnight, with forecasters warning of widespread icy conditions as temperatures plummet below freezing.
