Sir Martin's woodland memorial

A NEW Mills beauty spot has been dedicated to the memory of a former town councillor.

Sir Martin Doughty, who died in March, had also served on Derbyshire County Council and the Peak District National Park Authority and was chairman of Natural England.

Now an area in New Mills at Mousley Bottom has been renamed Martin's Wood in his memory.

The official renaming ceremony was attended by members of Sir Martin's family as well as Huw Irranca-Davies, Minister for Marine and Natural Environmental Wilderness and Rural Affairs, and High Peak MP Tom Levitt.

Sir Martin had been instrumental in the transformation of the site from a landfill site into a nature reserve.

He had been a Labour member for New Mills for over 20 years, and it was the local Labour party who suggested the renaming of the area.
