Second bridge must stay a priority, warns councillor

IT MAY be 13 years since councillor Barrie Taylor was chairman of Whaley Bridge Town Council, but the priorities have not wavered.

Cllr Taylor told members that the second bridge, which has been a priority for a long time, needed to remain that way.

The council has always given its backing to the proposals which would provide a second access into the Bingswood Industrial Estate and remove heavy lorries from the narrow roads at the historic Canal Basin.

Cllr Taylor said the second priority would be the Mechanics Institute for which the council acts as trustees: "For too long we have put up with it not being suitable. I suggest we begin to think about what the first steps ought to be to improve it for access."

Tribute was paid to the work of outgoing chairman Jake Walsh who was diagnosed with a serious illness during his term in office.

"I would like to thank Jake who during the last year continued to carry on with his usual enthusiasm and vigour despite as we know being not at all well," said Cllr Taylor.

Cllr Walsh expressed his appreciation for the support he had received from his fellow councillors.

Cllr John Swift was elected as Vice-Chairman of the town council.
