Scout camp wins £60,000 in grant
THERE will be plenty of happy campers at a Scout-run site at Gradbach, after a £60,000 grant for a new eco-friendly toilet and shower block was secured.
Temporary facilities are to be replaced by a permanent building incorporating a grass roof and an air source heat pump to supply heat and hot water.
The grant has been provided by the Peak District Rural Action Zone LEADER fund.
Chair of the LEADER Local Action Group, Cllr Lewis Rose OBE, said: "I am delighted that we are able to support this facility that not only has a positive economic impact on this rural area, but also provides a fantastic opportunity for young people to experience the outdoors and learn new skills."
The single-storey building has already been granted planning consent from the Peak District National Park Authority. It will include separate male/female toilets and showers, as well as disabled facilities.
Water-saving fixtures and fittings will be installed throughout and an air source heat pump will heat the new block efficiently and with little cost to the environment.
Peter Freeman from Gradbach Scout Camp said: "In addition to Scout and Guide units, we are extensively used by Duke of Edinburgh's Award groups for their expeditions," he said.
"We want to offer campers decent facilities and encourage them to purchase their supplies locally, but until now we have not been running at full capacity, so improving the services we offer will hopefully stimulate more visitors."
The camp site extends over nearly 50 acres, including open and woodland pitches.
The grounds also include indoor self-catering accommodation and it is all run by volunteers from High Peak District Scouts.
