Church and community leaders have worked together to create a project that will help people struggling to afford food.

New Mills Helping Hands will launch its Foodbank Project next week. The scheme is the joint venture of Derbyshire county councillor Beth Atkins and Churches Together, which consists of St Georges Parish Church, Low Leighton Community Methodist Church, The Revival Church, St Mary’s Catholic Church and Providence United Reformed Church.

Cllr Atkins explained: “It all started when I heard two men from New Mills had walked to a foodbank in a neighbouring town in search of food.”

The foodbank will be available by people in the New Mills who have been referred to it.

The Foodbank Cafe will operate out of the New Mills Parish Hall, in Church Lane, once a week.

“We’ll be making up food bags for people out of things like tins of meat and vegetables, canned fish and rice” she said.

The scheme welcomes donations of food and money. The group is also looking for donations of metal shelving to store the food, as well as volunteers to give out the food bags.

The Foodbank project will be launched on Saturday, March 23, at 10.30am in New Mills Town Hall, in Spring Bank.

Anyone interested in making a donation or volunteering is asked to attend the launch, call Cllr Atkins on 01663 746256, or St George’s Parish Church on 01663 743225.
