Scheme to aid high street?

A nationally-acclaimed scheme which has boosted business for over 1,300 Derbyshire tradespeople could be expanded into the high street.

Derbyshire County Council’s Trusted Trader has grown into the largest scheme of its kind in the country since its launch four years ago.

It was set up to help residents – particularly the elderly and the vulnerable – find a reliable trader to do a good job at a fair price and to provide a boost for businesses operating in Derbyshire.

Every trader is checked by trading standards and must promise not to cold call, either by telephone or at the doorstep, before they are allowed to join.

Now the county council is looking at the possibility of running a scheme along similar lines for independent retailers on the county’s high streets.

Members of the authority’s trading standards team will visit stores in four towns – including Buxton – to see whether they would be interested in joining a retail version of the scheme.

The four towns chosen for the research visits featured in the county council’s One Shop Derbyshire bid for Portas Pilot town status last year. The county council received £10,000 for investment in schemes to revitalise high streets.
