Scarecrow blaze sparks safety scare

POLICE are appealing for information after men set fire to a scarecrow created as part of carnival celebrations outside a pub.

The fire was started at about 2.30am on Sunday, June 14.

A group of men lit the scarecrow at the bottom of a fire escape outside the Queens Arms Hotel, Church Road, New Mills. The fire caused damage to a nearby door.

A police spokeswoman said: "No one was hurt but if the fire had spread this could have been a very serious incident."

Three of the men wore dark hooded tops while the fourth wore a white hooded top.

Anyone with information should call police on 0345 123 3333 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
