Rotarians in Burma appeal to the Peak
PEOPLE in the High Peak are being asked to add to the £300,000 worth of aid which has been sent to Burma following the recent cyclone thanks to Rotarians.
Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland (RIBI) were among the first charitable organisationson the ground after the disaster.
More than 1,000 Shelterboxes have been delivered by Rotarians with each Shelterbox having the capacity to house ten people for six months.
Aquaboxes to provide safe drinking water and LifeBoxes which contain 72 survival items for adults and children plus six Lifestraws have also been sent.
Responding to the worst Asian cyclone since 1991 will deplete RIBI's warehouses so people in the High Peak are being asked to help replenish stocks.
Schools, churches and other groups in the area have supported the initiative strongly in the past with Buxton Community School recently being presented with a special award in recognition of their help.
Jim Swift, Buxton Rotary President said: "This award is very well-deserved. We take water for granted in our Spa Town, but it's estimated that ten thousand people die each day due to diseases caused by a lack of clean water and sanitation.
"Clean water, which Aquabox provides, is particularly critical in the aftermath of disasters to prevent disease. So, our thanks to everyone at the School who contributed".
