A budget hotel chain has unveiled a £5 million scheme to transform a vacant Buxton pub into a 60-bed hotel and restaurant.
Premier Inn plans to redevelop the site of the Robin Hood Inn, which it acquired last week, and hopes to create 30 new jobs on opening.
The Marston’s pub, on London Road, closed down last week.
Nick Johnston, acquisition manager for Premier Inn’s parent company Whitbread, said: “Buxton is an incredibly popular search on the Premier Inn website.
“We know our customers want to come here and we have been searching for the right site in the town for many years. We have explored all of the options but the right site has not been available until now. The Robin Hood site is ideal for a new Premier Inn. It’s in a great location, is the right size and shape and is available and deliverable.”
Premier Inn’s plans include 63 on-site customer car parking spaces and a 62-cover restaurant and bar, which will be open to the public.
Nick added: “Buxton’s success is built on its beauty and local character. We recognise that and have spent a lot of time getting our designs right.
“We are proposing a conservatively designed hotel building that respects and suits its surroundings. It will provide an active front onto London Road and the designs include a variety of building materials such as stone, brick and render to create an interesting and attractive new building.
“We have also managed to retain the existing sycamore trees on the site. I am proud of what we have created and I am certain the hotel will be a positive addition to the town.”
Gary Timmins, of nearby Wyedale Close, said: “This is great news for Buxton. Let’s hope the people of Buxton give the council its full support. I did email various pub chains several months ago to say it was a great business opportunity for somebody with money and vision. If I had the money, I would have bought it myself.”
There will be a public exhibition of the plans on Thursday June 26 between 3pm and 8pm, at The Octagon at Pavilion Gardens, on St John’s Road, Buxton.
The proposals will be on display and members of the development team will be available to answer questions.
Full details will also be available on the consultation website for the scheme at premierinnbuxton.co.uk from Thursday June 26.
Premier Inn is expecting to submit a planning application to High Peak Borough Council for the proposed hotel later this summer.
