Police raid pubs in drug operation
ILLEGAL drug use in Buxton, Whaley Bridge and Chapel-en-le-Frith has been targeted in a joint operation between the police and High Peak Borough Council.
On Friday PCs, PCSO and Special Constables aided by a specialist passive drugs dog were accompanied by councillors Bill Fiddy and Jonathan Davey as well as Ian Nicholls from HPBC's Environmental Health department when they visited 20 licensed premises in the area. One man received a caution for possession of cannabis.
For the first time in the county, specialist UV-type lamps were used to check people for traces of cocaine.
Section Inspector Tracy Lewis said: "We are constantly working with other agencies to tackle the problems that drugs misuse can cause. This was a very successful operation and will be the first in a series of anti-drug initiatives that we will be running with High Peak Borough Council over the summer."
The operation took place ahead of this week's Home Office's National Tackling Drugs Week, (June 8-12), which aims to increase public confidence and awareness of the work being done.
A drugs awareness evening, to offer the public useful information and advice on drugs and their effects, is due to be held at the Pavilion Gardens, Buxton on Wednesday, July 8 between 6.30pm-9pm.
Councillor Andrew Bingham, HPBC's Executive member for community safety, said: "Drugs can cause untold misery and ruin people's lives. This is why we're committed to working with the police and our other community safety partners to clamp down on drugs misuse and to support those affected by drugs use, both directly and indirectly."
