People power supermarket?

COULD a People’s Supermarket be created in Buxton? That is the question being asked by various groups across the town following the success of schemes elsewhere.

The original project in London, which featured in a Channel 4 documentary, is a simple concept – an independent no-waste supermarket, run for the people by the people.

Already the idea has been taken up in other towns and cities across the UK. Now efforts are being made to look at creating a similar co-operative scheme here in Buxton.

Supporters say a People’s Supermarket would create a cheaper alternative as well as providing an outlet for locally grown produce from allotments holders, or chutneys and jams made across the area.

In a bid to keep prices as low as possible, the shop would be run by members who work there for free in exchange for a discount on their shopping and a chance to vote on how the supermarket is run.

Roman Gawel, one of those backing such a scheme said: “We have contacted the original People’ Supermarket and told them about the plans.”

He said they had offered practical support and advice if the project moves forward.

The project complements proposals put to High Peak Borough Council in 2010 to bring Serpentine House and the derelict former glass back into use for the benefit of the local community.

The idea was to create a scheme run by volunteers, to grow produce locally in a sustainable way and act as an education centre to promote healthy diets.

A online petition was created and attracted further support this summer when a controversial planning application for homes on the site was put forward by the council.

The planning application was withdrawn and it is not yet known if new plans will be submitted.
