Peak mayor toasts 100th birthday

HIGH Peak Mayor Peter Kay was on hand to toast a Buxton resident's very special birthday last week.

Edna Hill celebrated her 100th birthday on Friday and was presented with a bouquet of flowers by Cllr Kay to mark the occasion. The Mayor also proposed a toast to Mrs Hill, who lives at Hartington Gardens.

Mrs Hill was born in Swanwick near Derby but moved to Buxton with her husband Harold who was searching for work in the local quarries.

The couple initially intended to stay in Buxton for only a short time but Mrs Hill has now been living in the town for around 75 years!

Mrs Hill has had a number of jobs during her long life including working at her local Woolworths before she moved to the High Peak, Litton Mill and more recently, the John Duncan School in Buxton.

She celebrated her birthday with her family and friends, including her 94-year-old sister who she had not seen for three years and who travelled up from Hampshire to help her celebrate. Mrs Hill has no children but has a large group of nieces and nephews.

She lived in her own home until she was 90 and remains very independent.
