POLICE have vowed not to become complacent after figures revealed a drop in crime in New Mills and Hayfield over the past year.

Sergeant Greg McGill said the news was “hugely encouraging” and promised to continue working to stamp out crime in the areas.

The statistics show:

• Violent crimes have dropped 34 per cent from 94 to 62

• Thefts have fallen nearly 50 per cent from 215 to 120

• Criminal damage has decreased 36 per cent from 102 to 65

• Domestic burglaries have dwindled from 21 to 15

• Other burglaries are down from 44 to 31

Sgt McGill said: “It is hugely encouraging to see a drop in the number of reported crimes but we will not be getting complacent.

“We’ve achieved this through hard work and good relations between police, our partner agencies and the local community.

“I want to make sure the drop continues and we’ll be putting all our efforts into bringing these numbers down even further over the next few months.”

Sgt McGill added that officers would pay particular attention to tackling anti-social behaviour in New Mills and Hayfield by increasing patrols and engaging with youngsters.

Over the past three months, police have been seizing alcohol from underage drinkers and banning troublemakers from certain areas for 48 hours.
