Pavilion Gardens damage probed

POLICE have stepped up patrols after a spate of criminal damage at Buxton’s Pavilion Gardens.

Officers from the town’s Safer Neighbourhood team will be carrying out high-visibility checks in the area after a small number of incidents of damage in recent weeks.

The latest happened this week, overnight between Monday January 28 and Tuesday morning.

Witnesses reported seeing a group of youths causing damage to the building next to the boating late in the park.

Officers attended the scene and saw that a wooden door had been kicked in, although no one was found nearby.

A similar incident occurred late at night on January 9, when the door of a kiosk was also kicked in.

Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) Linda Cook, from Buxton Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “The Pavilion Gardens are enjoyed by many members of the public and we don’t want that enjoyment to be ruined by people damaging the buildings for no reason.

“It might seem like a bit of harmless fun but what these people are doing is a crime and they could face a prosecution, while someone else is left to clear up their mess.

“We will be increasing patrols in the area and there are CCTV cameras, too, so we’ll study the footage to find those responsible for the damage.”

Anyone with any information on the damage is asked to call police on the non-emergency number 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
