Crowds flocked to see Paralympic champs Dame Sarah and Barney Storey switch on Disley’s Christmas lights on Friday.

The gold medal-winning cyclists, who live in the village, braved the drizzle with their five-month old baby Louisa to push the button on the Ram Green, off Buxton Road West.

Cllr David Kidd, chairman of Disley Parish Council, who organised the event, said: “It went really well, it was a really successful evening. There was a great turnout, our best yet.

“It was the first time we’ve had a firework display, but it was brilliant. We’re really pleased. A lot of hard work went into organising it.”

The switch on was followed by festive performances by New Mills Brass Band, Disley Parish Church choir St Mary’s Junior Singers, led by Leah Jackson, and carol singers the Christmas Tree Singers, led by Margaret Toft.

Meanwhile Santa sledged into the School House car park, village stores offered late night shopping and snowflakes were projected onto the Ram’s Head pub.
