Orchard group needs tree sponsors

NEW Mills Orchard Committee are looking at providing public access to the orchard area.

Resident Alan Jackson, representing the Access Group on the committee, has been offering valuable advice and different routes are being considered and costed before a decision is made.

The group is also considering introducing beekeepers to the Orchard area.

The bees should have the effect of increasing pollination and of course will produce honey and related products.

A 'sponsor a tree' scheme is being developed for the Orchard and it is hoped that, in the future, groups and individuals will buy a tree and extend the varieties.

As this is the site of an ancient orchard, they are trying to plant varieties of old Derbyshire trees to aid the preservation of those species.

In the Spring, seating is to be put in to enable people to enjoy the trees and the views over New Mills.

As it develops, it is hoped that local schools will use the Orchard facility for educational purposes – an open-air classroom and an ideal picnic area.
