New shop is toast of the village
PINTS of milk are a big hit at the Queen's Arms in Taddington!
The traditional watering hole has opened its own local shop – the first in the village for 12 years.
Thanks to part-funding from the Rural Development Agency, landlady Jane Allen has converted her pool room into a store selling convenience foods ranging from bread and milk to locally-sourced meat, fruit and vegetables.
And the unusual enterprise is already proving popular with residents, who had previously identified the need for a village shop to breathe new life into the small rural community.
Jane said: "The local shop is essentially a meeting place, bringing the community together.
"My husband and I bought the place 18 months ago. The pool room is never used during the week, and people kept talking about the need for a village shop.
"The shop is open during the week and at weekends, but at night-time it can still be used as a pool room, which is good because we have a pub team in the winter!
She added: "There is a bus service every hour, but if you run out of bread you have to wait an hour to get to Buxton, and then face another wait coming back.
"Quite a lot of elderly people also live in the village and find it difficult to get out, so we are also operating a delivery service."
Jane was born in the village, and sees the shop as a way of giving something back to her local community.
And it has already turned into something of a family affair, with daughter Kirsty, parents Carol and Ken Tibbles and cousin Adam Beardmore all helping run the newly-expanded business.
