New headteacher starts at Chapel High School

The start of a new school year always brings a crop of eager new faces at any school and September 2011 was no exception at Chapel-en-le-Frith High School.

However, unusually, one of the new faces was that of the headteacher Simon Grieves.

Only the fourth headteacher in the school’s history, he joins Chapel-en-le-Frith from his post of associate headteacher at Castle Hall School in Mirfield in Kirklees.

He replaces Stuart Ash who has retired after leading the school for 18 years.

Mr Grieves said: “Chapel-en-le-Frith High School is a good school and is well-placed to move forward after the strong results achieved by students in August.

“But there is always room for improvement and my aim is to ensure that progress for all students is outstanding as a result of consistently outstanding teaching and learning.

“The staff team here is extremely strong and we are in a good position to achieve wonderful things.

“I’m looking forward to seeing the school becoming known as a centre of excellence for what it offers to both students and staff.”

A native of Sunderland, Mr Grieves studied as an electrical engineer at Staffordshire Polytechnic before completing teacher training at Leeds University.

He started his teaching career as a teacher of Design Technology at Airedale High School in Castleford, West Yorkshire, before moving to Castle Hall in 1998.

In his 13 years at Castle Hall he worked in a number of different positions, gaining experience as a curriculum and pastoral leader and in areas such as finance, special educational needs and inclusion; a background which left him particularly well qualified for his new role at Chapel-en-le-Frith.

Throughout his career Mr Grieves’ driving commitment has always been to raise standards, ensuring that all students, whatever their ability, are supported to reach their potential; a belief that fits well with the ethos of Chapel-en-le-Frith.

He is passionate, too, about his commitment to students with special educational needs, another feature which attracted him to Chapel-en-le-Frith where he was delighted to see the close work of the teaching and support staff team, carefully focused on students’ development and progress.

On a personal level the move to the High Peak brings other positives for Mr Grieves.

As a rock climber and fell runner, he already knows the area and is looking forward to spending more time here.
