Nail in town's coffin?

CONSTRUCTION of a new supermarket on the outskirts of Glossop town centre would have been "another nail in the coffin" for independent retailers in Hadfield, a local councillor has claimed.

Marie Foote, ward councillor for Hadfield South, spoke out against controversial proposals for a Lidl foodstore at Brookfield, Dinting,at High Peak Borough Council's Development Control Committee on Monday.

The application for the former Wild and Hallam car showroom site was unanimously refused by committee members.

Cllr Foote said: "The use of the site as a supermarket would be another nail in the coffin of our small and independent shopkeepers of Hadfield."

The proposal by Lidl UK was to construct a 1,310 square metre foodstore on the site, complete 73 car parking spaces and a landscaping scheme, which would be accessed off the already congested A57 at Brookfield.

Cllr Roger Wilkinson recognised the employment prospects of the vacant site and was keen to bring it back into use, however a supermarket was not the answer:"It is clearly designed to stop car users from coming into Glossop. It would be detrimental to the town centre and businesses would suffer because of it," he commented.

Cllr Peter Kay said: "It should be high quality employment land, with a large number of people being employed."

And Cllr Bob McKeown added: "We have all seen what the traffic is like along that road, and this scheme just wouldn't work."

The Council received eight letters of objection to the proposals, a petition containing 33 signatures. Eight letters of support were received.

A mail drop by Lidl in Gamesley, Hollingworth and Hadfield resulted in 633 responses supported the development and 19 objections.
