A Buxton woman is supporting a hospice’s Christmas appeal to say thank-you for the amazing care given to her partner.

Jill Wilday is backing Ashgate Hospice’s Lights of Love appeal in memory of her partner of 18 years, Jood Griffin, who died from cancer in February this year, aged just 46.

The Chesterfield-based hospice made it possible for Jood to stay at her Buxton home for as long as possible by providing specialist clinical, nursing, physiotherapy and home care support services.

Jill said: “Ashgate organised home visits and phone support from a whole host of people – even though we lived in Buxton.

“Jood chose palliative care rather than any treatment. She was not afraid of death, but she was very scared about how she was going to get to the point of dying.

“She was in a great deal of pain, but Ashgate’s support, help and information were a lifeline at a very scary time. Everyone concerned was so kind, patient and understanding.”

Jood, who had been living with ME for 20 years, was eventually admitted to Ashgate Hospice for further pain and symptom management to make her as comfortable as possible during the six weeks before her death.

Jill added: “Being away from home was a big deal for her and she had always dreaded having to go into hospital. It quickly became clear that Ashgate was different – a place of laughter, kindness, listening and of course amazing care. I was invited to stay in Jood’s room whenever I wanted and so stayed most of the time with her.”

Jill is now urging people in the High Peak to support the Hospice’s Lights of Love appeal to commemorate someone they love and support a local hospice.

Every light dedicated will be placed on Ashgate’s special Christmas tree in the hospice grounds which will shine throughout the festive period.
