It's off with your licence, shop told

HIGH Peak retailers are being given a wake-up call on underage sales after a Chapel store became the latest in the county to have it's licence to sell alcohol suspended.

A licence review was requested after a sale of alcohol was made twice to an underage volunteer on 7 March 2009 at Londis High Peak Stores, Thornbrook Road, Chapel-en-le-Frith, High Peak.

Under the Licensing Act 2003 it is an offence to sell alcohol to under 18s and retailers can face having their premises licence suspended, modified or even removed.

Derbyshire County Council's Trading Standards – as the responsible authority under the act - can apply for a review of a premise's licence if they feel that the requirements of the act are being broken.

DCC's Cabinet Member for Communities Councillor Carol Hart said: "We will continue to enforce the licensing laws and will seek to suspend or take away licences from those retailers who fail to take their responsibilities seriously."

High Peak Borough Council's licensing sub-committee met last week to review the store's licence and made the decision to suspend the licence for three months and imposed strict conditions on it.

The premise's licence holder has 21 days to appeal against the decision.
