Is paying to park just the ticket at Whaley?

COULD the introduction of pay and display charges be the answer to Whaley Bridge's parking problems?

The town's main 46-space Bingswood car park, which is currently free, has seen an influx of cars since the launch of the new civil parking enforcement.

Whaley Bridge Town Council heard last week how the introduction of traffic wardens was stopping motorists from abusing the short stay parking bays on Market Street and Canal Street, which had caused difficulties for residents and shoppers.

But this meant parking around the town – in particular at Bingswood – was now reaching full capacity.

"Parking facilities in the town are now under pressure," said Cllr Jake Walsh, chairman. "One suggestion is for pay and display in the main car park."

The Town Council had strongly resisted previous attempts by High Peak Borough Council to introduce pay and display at Bingswood because they believed it would not be enforced.

Cllr Jonathan Goldfinch said: " I am not in favour of pay and display. I think in a small town like Whaley Bridge, it will drive people away.

"Maybe there is the potential on the main road, instead of having two sides of parking, to have parking on one side and have slotted bays which may increase parking, and couple that with various road safety improvements."

Land at the Canal Basin, under the ownership of British Waterways, and on Wharf Road had the potential for being used for car parking, said Cllr Goldfinch.

And Cllr John Pritchard suggested the borough look again at the possibility of extending Bingswood car park towards the river bank.

The Town Council is to ask High Peak Borough Council to investigate parking provision in Whaley Bridge.
