Hospital bus taking OAPs to 'early grave'

THE SHORTAGE of a direct bus service to Stepping Hill Hospital is "sending people to an early grave", a councillor has claimed.

Hayfield Parish Council is to lobby Derbyshire County Council and High Peak MP Tom Levitt, demanding a direct service be reinstated.

People travelling to the hospital, from Hayfield or New Mills, currently have to change buses at Marple, Newtown or Glossop, depending on the route they take.

Council chairman Andrew Ramwell said many pensioners were being badly let down.

"Pensioners have to stand in draughty bus shelters for around half an hour, hoping their connecting buses come.

"We are just sending these people to an early grave," he told members of Hayfield Parish Council last week.

In December, the Advertiser reported how Hayfield Pensioners' Association had started a petition calling for the reinstatement of a direct service.
