Horsemeat not in meals

EDUCATION chiefs have moved to reassure High Peak parents that their children’s school meals do not contain horsemeat.

Derbyshire County Council said its school meals are cooked using meat produced on two local organic farms.

No ready meals are used as all dinners are fully prepared by the catering service.

Products are subject to regular and stringent checks which detail the origins of the beef and information about the farms.

Cllr Mike Longden, Derbyshire County Council’s cabinet member for education, said: “In the wake of national concern about this issue I’m keen to pre-empt any worries by making it clear our school meals meet the very highest standards.

“We work very hard to make sure our meals offer the best possible value for money to parents and never compromise on quality,” added Cllr Longden.

The county council’s assurances come after tests found some Findus beef lasagnes contained up to 100 per cent horsemeat.

Speaking during a House of Commons debate on Monday, environment secretary Owen Paterson said it appeared “criminal activity” had been at the heart of the scandal.
