WARNINGS of severe weather have been issued as the High Peak braces itself for the possibility of significant snowfall.

The prolonged cold snap has already seen temperatures across the region drop to near -10C, with forecasters predicting around two to four inches of snow for the region this weekend.

A Met Office spokesperson said: “It will be a very cold weekend for the Buxton area with snow through Saturday afternoon and evening. There is a weather warning in place and we could see 5cm-10cm of snow.

“Temperatures are unlikely to get above freezing until Sunday and with this brings the likelihood of icy conditions so it is very important that people keep up to date with our forecasts over the next few days.”

The freezing conditions are expected to play havoc with the schedules of local sports clubs, and lead to hazardous driving conditions on the roads, especially over higher routes.

A Met Office cold weather alert has been issued for the entire country, and Derbyshire County Council has called on residents to do their bit to help keep themselves, neighbours and vulnerable people safe and warm.

Cabinet Member for Public Heath, Cllr Carol Hart, said: “We know from experience that prolonged spells of severe weather can cause problems but if we all take extra care and look out for our elderly or vulnerable neighbours, we can stay safe.”

If you’re concerned about an older person or a vulnerable adult Call Derbyshire on 08456 058 058 or 01629 533190.
