An Indian restaurant in Old Glossop is thought to be the first in the High Peak to serve non halal curries.
From next month, the Bulls Head, on Church Street, will offer their full menu with the choice of non halal or traditional halal meat, following a customer’s request.
Halal meat, which Muslims are allowed to eat under Islamic law, is prepared by slaughtering the animal with a sharp knife by cutting the throat, windpipe and the blood vessels in the neck while the animal is conscious.
The slaughter must be performed by a Muslim and the animal must be blessed.
Regular Ivan Bell said: “I have had a long, friendly and illuminating discussion with the management, who could see my point of view and are willing to provide this alternative curry as well as their traditional curry.
“I have to admit there will be no difference in the taste and an excellent curry can be obtained here at a very reasonable price.
“I hope their customers both regular and new will take advantage of this new concept in UK curries which if successful may spread to other progressive curry houses in the UK and assist with the welfare of our farm animals.”
The news comes after the emergence of the UK’s first halal organic farms, who are calling on British Muslims to become more aware about where their meat comes from.
