Give us the tools and we'll find the jobs

A BOOST to post-recession job prospects was delivered by Derbyshire County Council Adult Community Education last week as the new Toolbox Centre was opened by High Peak MP Tom Levitt and County Councillor Dave Wilcox.

Located on the A57 industrial Estate at Brookfield, the Centre has been given at a peppercorn rent by the County Council.

Already adult learners have taken responsibility for preparing the inside of the Industrial Unit, developing their project management skills and taking ownership of the project from the start.

With more than 20 people already registered on courses which range from motorcycle maintenance, garden design, building trade training, bricklaying, tiling and plastering, the Centre is already off to a flying start.

At the opening, attended by Adult Community Education staff and representatives from police, job centre plus and connexions, High Peak MP Tom Levitt welcomed the forward looking investment by Derbyshire County Council and paid tribute to the staff and partners who had already started to make the Centre function.

"At a time of world recession it is crucial that we equip and train people to be ready to take advantage of the upturn when it arrives." he said.

Programme Manager Pat Javanaud told the group that once the basic training programme was established, there would be evening workshops for those in work.

"We are looking to train those with skills to become the teachers and tutors of the future and by 2010 we will introduce DIY courses for the many women who frequently ask how they can enhance their craft skills in the home."

After the opening Cllr Dave Wilcox said that he hoped the Toolbox Centre was the start of something bigger.

"City and Guilds courses are a starting point, but with referrals from Job Centre Plus, Connexions and hopefully in due course from local secondary schools, the recruitment pool for students is high.

"As local politicians we have a duty to ensure that when jobs are hard to find, we offer training and hope to younger people." said the County Councillor for Gamesley and Hadfield.

"I'm pleased that I was able to persuade Derbyshire County Council to assist and take responsibility for enhancing training options in Glossopdale."

Access to the courses will be organised by Adult Community Education Gamesley. To find out more call telephone 01457 858035.
