Fairfield joy at Ofsted’s praise

STAFF, parents and pupils at Fairfield Endowed Junior School in Buxton are celebrating a good Ofsted report – six years after being given Notice to Improve.

In its ‘good’ grading from Ofsted, the Boarstones Lane school has been praised in a number of areas by inspectors.

Their report states: “In the very large majority of lessons teaching is good, and it is occasionally outstanding; the curriculum is well planned to meet pupils’ individual needs and prepares them well for the next stage of their education and, almost all pupils make good progress throughout the school, including in reading, writing and mathematics.”

It is a long-awaited grading for the school, which has worked hard to turn things around since receiving the improvement notice in 2006.

Headteacher Vicky Gilliker said: “We are delighted – this really is a good day for the school, and everyone connected with it.

“This is not an overnight success but one which the school has worked hard to achieve.

“We will take a little time to enjoy the moment – but then it will be back to work, ensuring that our children get the best education we can give them.

“We will look closely at Ofsted’s recommendations and will seek to continue to improve the quality of education at the school even further.”

The school missed out on being graded as outstanding because inspectors found that: pupils are not given enough opportunities to take an active part in their lessons; there are too few opportunities for pupils to develop their independent learning skills and pupils, especially more-able pupils, are not always given challenging enough work in mathematics that will help them to make more rapid progress.
