‘Fairfield deserves a free cash machine’

Fairfield resident Liz Martin is hoping to start a campaign to get a free cash point for the area.

Fairfield resident Liz Martin is hoping to start a campaign to get a free cash point for the area.

CAMPAIGNERS are calling for a free-to-use cash machine in Fairfield.

Liz Martin, 65, of Bench Road, has spoken out at the “ridiculous” lack of a free ATM in the area.

Fairfield has two cash machines but each charge almost £2 per transaction.

Mrs Martin, who is blind, said: “It’s unfair and ridiculous.

“Fairfield folk are having to pay money to get money or walk into town just to use a free cash machine.

“Fairfield is a big area with a lot of people who really want an ATM which doesn’t charge,” she added.

Mrs Martin’s calls have been backed by two high-profile Derbyshire campaign groups.

Emma Bates, manager of the Financial Inclusion Derbyshire Partnership, said: “We are very concerned about the lack of a free-to-use cash machine in Fairfield.

“It’s another barrier and cost for an area where many people are already facing financial difficulties.”

And Liz Fletcher, of High Peak CVS, called for urgent action to address the problem.

LINK oversees the UK’s cash machine network.

Spokesman Mark Bowerman said LINK was aware of the cash machine issues in Fairfield.

He added: “We would welcome any suggestions for suitable sites for a new free-to-use cash machine in the area.”
